What to do in St Helens Tasmania
Situated on the north east coast of Tasmania, St Helens is the largest town in the region. The heart of the township is located on the foreshore of Georges Bay which was originally settled because it was frequently used by whalers and sealers in the 1830s. The settlement was renamed from Georges Bay to St Helens in 1882.
Today St Helens is primarily a tourism destination and given it’s on the Sunny East Coast and Georges Bay has such a narrow inlet that it’s akin to a lake, it’s perfect for recreational fishing, boating, holidaying and exploring.
St Helens is the gateway to the beautiful Bay of Fires, world renown as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Bay of Fires is a beautiful beach with pristine pale blue waters and quartz-white sand, but it is most well-known for the iconic orange lichen formations on the rocks of the beach.
If you love fresh seafood St Helens is for you, or perhaps you’re due for well earned round of golf at the local course after a few days exploring Tassie in your motorhome. There’s great food, wine and Pyengana cheese available at the restaurants or if you’re after something more relaxing grab some fresh fish and chips and sneak off in your campervan to one of the quiet beaches or nature reserves in and around the breathtaking Bay of Fires – voted the number one beach in the world by Lonely Planet in 2009.

Humbug Point Nature Recreation Area
Explore the natural wonder of Tasmania’s stunning east coast with beach walks, bird watching and fishing. Head towards Binalong Bay and you’ll see the signs.
St Helens Point Conservation Area
This general area is a great spot for surfing so don’t forget to bring your board! There’s also plenty of beach access and if you want to go swimming in the sea rather than Georges Bay Beerbarrel Beach is a good place to go. To find it head south through St Helens and just follow Georges Bay until you can go no further!
Fishing Charters
If you’re after a day or half-day on the water and you don’t have a boat then try one of the local fishing charters – Michael Haley’s Gone Fishing Charters, Zulu Charterz or Rocky Carosi Fishing Charters. Who knows you might even catch dinner!
